"American-trained Afghan forces are fleeing over the border to Tajikistan rather than fighting without American air support, and armed militias are springing up around the country, a fact reminiscent of the terrible civil war that engulfed Afghanistan after the Soviets left.

American forces have completed about 90% of their withdrawal at this point, and in a moment brimming with dark symbolism, they departed Bagram air base with no coordination with Afghan forces, ceding the deserted beating heart of the once-mighty American war machine in Afghanistan to looters and thieves."
