I get it....those were some pretty abhorrent statements. And he was 30 or 31 years old at the time...certainly old enough to know better. And I'm never one to think that "well, he was pissed" is an excuse for anything.

But...it was 45 years ago. That's a long time. A really long time.

Maybe Clapton hold the same views today. That would be worth knowing. The article doesn't say. Maybe Clapton very much regrets his virulently racist remarks and has taken steps to make what amends he can. That would be worth knowing. The article doesn't say.
